“Way over yonder, that's where I'm bound”
Mary Joan Carder May 20, 1958 – February 15, 2026
Mary Joan Carder, 67, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in Kent City, Michigan, where she had been living with her sister Patricia. She was born on May 20, 1958, in Toledo, Ohio, to Earl Carder and Joan Campbell, the eighth of sixteen children.
From humble beginnings, Mary grew up in a large household where she understood early on what it meant to show up for the people you love. When parental guidance was scarce, she stepped forward, quietly and without hesitation, to hold her family together. She was the glue, the constant, the one her siblings could always count on. That spirit of selfless devotion never left her. And with sixteen children sharing a single bathroom, patience was not just a virtue in the Carder household, it was a survival skill.
To know Mary was to feel cared for. She had a rare and generous nature, always going out of her way for others, putting the needs of those around her before her own. Her love was not spoken in grand gestures but lived out in the small, faithful acts of someone who simply showed up, again and again, for everyone she held dear. She was also known for her great sense of humor, a quick wit and warm laugh that could lighten any room and put anyone at ease.
In 1980, Mary married James Doriot, and together they built a loving home and raised three children, David, Brandon, and Megan. Though She and James eventually parted ways, the two maintained a lifelong bond rooted in mutual respect and a shared commitment to their family. No matter the circumstances, they always did their best to show up for their children and for each other.
In her later years, Mary found deep joy in the simple pleasures she had always deserved, traveling and spending time with her sisters. It was a beautiful season of receiving the love she had so long given to others.
She is survived by her children, David, Brandon, and Megan Doriot; her longtime partner, Robert Hellom; and her siblings Sandra Bustamante, Rosalie McKimm, Patrick Carder, Catherine Bell, Brenda Weaver, Patricia Hyde, Laura Wright, Wendy Hammer, Cynthia Smith, and Stephanie Smith. She leaves behind countless others whose lives were made warmer by her presence.
Mary’s legacy is felt in the lives she quietly steadied, the family she fiercely protected, and the love she gave so freely. Wherever we are, her love will always find us. She will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at CJ’s on Third, 139 W 3rd St, Perrysburg, OH 43551. Family and friends are warmly welcome to attend and celebrate her life.
